The two leaders reflected on the vibrant economic and cultural ties that bind the two nations, underscored by the nearly one million Canadians of Filipino descent who contribute to Canada’s multicultural fabric. Prime Minister Carney and President Marcos also paused to honour the victims of the Lapu-Lapu Day tragedy in Vancouver earlier this year, extending heartfelt condolences to families and communities affected by the incident.
During the conversation, Prime Minister Carney emphasized Canada’s commitment to expanding investment and trade with the Philippines, highlighting the potential for a strengthened economic partnership, including progress toward a free trade agreement. He noted the Philippines as a key partner in Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy.
Both leaders also expressed their shared commitment to a free, open, and rules-based Indo-Pacific region, stressing the importance of regional security, sovereignty, and international law amid growing tensions in the South China Sea and beyond.
Prime Minister Carney extended an official invitation to President Marcos Jr. to visit Canada, reinforcing the intent to bolster diplomatic engagement between the two nations. The leaders concluded by agreeing to remain in close contact as both countries pursue mutual goals in trade, security, and people-to-people ties.
