Kananaskis, Alberta (Rajeev Sharma): Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney held a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the 2025 G7 Leaders’ Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta.
Prime Minister Carney outlined his government’s strategy to revitalize, rearm, and reinvest in the Canadian Armed Forces – achieving the NATO 2 percent target this year and expediting investments in subsequent years.

“Great to be in Canada for the G7 summit. Thanks so much to Mark J Carney for the warm welcome and good discussion on NATO. Canada plays a key role in our Alliance. Looking forward to doing more together – investing more, producing more, and ensuring continued support to Ukraine,” said Mark Rutte.
Prime Minister Carney underscored the new government’s commitment to asserting Canada’s sovereignty and enhancing collaboration with the NATO Alliance. The leaders engaged in discussions on trans-Atlantic security and supporting Ukraine in achieving a just and lasting peace, including through the provision of military assistance.
The Prime Minister anticipated meeting again with Secretary General Rutte at the forthcoming NATO Summit in The Hague, Netherlands, scheduled for June 24 to 25.
