Ottawa, Ontario (Rajeev Sharma): Prime Minister Mark Carney participated today in a virtual session of the Coalition of the Willing, aimed at reinforcing international support for Ukraine. The meeting was co-chaired by French President Emmanuel Macron, UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and attended by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
During the discussions, coalition members welcomed progress achieved in recent talks between the United States and Ukraine, while commending the efforts of President Zelenskyy and former U.S. President Donald Trump and their teams toward a negotiated settlement.
Leaders focused on establishing a durable framework for peace in Ukraine, acknowledging that certain issues remain unresolved. They reaffirmed the Coalition’s readiness to provide strong security guarantees for Ukraine and stressed the importance of maintaining pressure on Russia through coordinated economic measures. Participants also highlighted that decisions regarding transatlantic security must be made collectively among all involved nations.
The coalition emphasized the necessity of continued support for Ukraine’s defence amid ongoing Russian aggression, even as peace negotiations advance. Prime Minister Carney reiterated Canada’s steadfast support for Ukraine and pledged the country’s active participation in facilitating a successful peace process alongside international partners.
This virtual session underscores the ongoing commitment of global leaders to Ukraine’s security and the pursuit of a negotiated and lasting resolution to the conflict.
