UAE, January 1, 2026: A significant breakthrough has been reported in the murder case of Punjab-based social media influencer Kanchan Kumari, popularly known as Kamal Kaur Bhabi, with the detention of the main accused, Amritpal Singh Mehron, in the United Arab Emirates, sources said.
According to preliminary information, Mehron was taken into custody by Sharjah Police during a sudden enforcement drive. His identity reportedly came under scrutiny during visa-related verification, following which local authorities detained him for questioning. Officials familiar with the matter said that he is currently being interrogated, while formal legal procedures are in progress.
Sources added that once the mandatory legal formalities are completed in the UAE, steps are expected to be initiated for Mehron’s deportation to India. Indian investigating agencies are closely tracking the developments and are in regular coordination with authorities abroad.
The killing of Kanchan Kumari on June 9, 2025, had triggered widespread outrage across Punjab. During the course of the investigation, police identified Amritpal Singh Mehron as the key conspirator and alleged mastermind behind the crime. Several important leads and disclosures have already emerged, but Mehron had remained absconding for months, prompting an extensive search by law enforcement agencies.
Officials indicated that upon his return to India, Punjab Police is likely to formally arrest Mehron at the airport. He is expected to be subjected to detailed interrogation as investigators aim to piece together the full sequence of events and identify any additional individuals linked to the murder.
