Pope Francis Makes Surprise Appearance at Vatican, Shares Message of Hope Amid Recovery

Vatican City, April 6, 2025 — Pope Francis made an unannounced and emotional appearance in St. Peter’s Square on Sunday, his first public outing since being discharged from hospital two weeks ago after battling life-threatening pneumonia.

The 88-year-old pontiff was wheeled to the front of the altar during a special Jubilee Mass dedicated to the sick and health workers. As he appeared, the crowd stood and applauded. “Good Sunday to everyone,” he greeted them, tapping the microphone for sound. “Thank you very much.”

His voice, while still fragile, carried more strength than during his brief remarks outside Gemelli Hospital on March 23. The pope is currently undergoing physical, respiratory, and speech therapy, and is expected to remain on doctor-ordered rest for at least another six weeks.

Archbishop Rino Fisichella, organiser of the ongoing Holy Year that is expected to draw 30 million pilgrims to Rome, delivered the homily on the pope’s behalf. In it, Francis reflected deeply on his own experience with illness.

“In this moment of my life, I share a lot: the experience of infirmity, feeling weak, depending on others, needing support,” he said. “It is a school in which we learn to love and to let ourselves be loved… without despairing, grateful to God and our brothers.”

He called on the faithful to embrace rather than exclude the vulnerable. “Let’s not ostracise pain from our surroundings,” he said. “Let’s instead make it an opportunity to grow together and cultivate hope.”

During his traditional blessing, Francis offered heartfelt prayers for doctors, nurses, and all health workers, acknowledging the difficult conditions many face. “Their mission is not easy and must be supported and respected,” he said.
