New Delhi, August 9, 2025 — Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrated Raksha Bandhan with joy and warmth on Friday, welcoming children to his official residence in Delhi. The young visitors tied colourful rakhis on the Prime Minister’s wrist, exchanging smiles and blessings in a heartwarming display of the festival’s essence. The occasion reflected the age-old tradition that honours the unbreakable bond of love and protection between siblings.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also embraced the festive spirit, marking the day with schoolchildren and members of the Brahmakumari organisation. Young girls and women tied rakhis on his wrist, and in return, Singh offered blessings and good wishes. He described Raksha Bandhan as more than a ritual — a commitment to ensuring the happiness, safety, and dignity of sisters.
Union Minister Piyush Goyal celebrated at Vanijya Bhawan in Delhi, meeting children and presenting them with gifts. The celebrations at his office were filled with laughter, heartfelt conversations, and expressions of affection.
Earlier, Prime Minister Modi extended greetings to the nation through a post on X, expressing hope that the festival would strengthen bonds of affection and unity. Union Home Minister Amit Shah, in his own message, called Raksha Bandhan a sacred celebration of love, trust, and mutual commitment between brothers and sisters. He wished that the day bring joy and enthusiasm into the lives of all citizens.
Raksha Bandhan is a significant Hindu festival with deep cultural and historical roots. Traditionally, sisters tie a decorative thread, or rakhi, around their brothers’ wrists, symbolising a bond of care and protection. In return, brothers present gifts and pledge to safeguard their sisters. References to this tradition are found in ancient Hindu scriptures, underscoring its enduring relevance.
This year, the festival falls on August 9, coinciding with Shravan Poornima, a date of special significance in the Hindu calendar. Beyond families, Raksha Bandhan has also come to symbolise the broader values of compassion, solidarity, and mutual respect within society.
