PM Modi to Visit Mauritius as Chief Guest for National Day Celebrations

New Delhi, March 11, 2025 – Prime Minister Narendra Modi will embark on a two-day state visit to Mauritius on Tuesday, where he will be the chief guest at the island nation’s 57th National Day celebrations on March 12.

Strengthening India-Mauritius Relations

Ahead of his visit, Modi emphasized the strong historical and cultural ties between India and Mauritius.

“At the invitation of my friend, Prime Minister Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam, I am embarking on this visit to celebrate Mauritius’ National Day. Mauritius is a close maritime neighbour, a key partner in the Indian Ocean, and a gateway to the African continent. We are connected by history, geography, and culture,” Modi said on Monday.

This will be Modi’s second visit to Mauritius in this capacity, having previously attended the National Day celebrations in March 2015.

A Vision for Regional Growth

During his visit, Modi aims to engage with the Mauritian leadership to enhance the strategic partnership in areas such as trade, security, and development. He highlighted that India and Mauritius share deep mutual trust, democratic values, and a strong people-to-people connect.

“We have made significant strides in the past decade through people-centric initiatives. I am confident that this visit will strengthen our friendship and open a new, brighter chapter in our bilateral ties,” he added.

Mauritius’ National Day, celebrated on March 12, holds special significance as it commemorates the launch of Mahatma Gandhi’s historic Dandi Salt March in 1930.

A Key Partner in India’s Global Strategy

Mauritius remains a key pillar in India’s Neighbourhood First policy, Vision SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region), and commitment to the Global South. This visit is expected to reinforce cooperation in trade, maritime security, and economic development between the two nations.
