NEW DELHI (Rajeev Sharma): On the occasion of October 2nd, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri, reflecting on their legacies and urging the nation to continue drawing inspiration from their values to build a strong, self-sustaining India.
Taking to social media, the Prime Minister described Gandhi Jayanti as a moment to honor the life of a man whose principles of truth, non-violence, and simplicity reshaped not only India’s freedom movement but also influenced civil rights struggles across the globe. Modi noted that Gandhi’s commitment to compassion and service remains a guiding force in the country’s development path.
He also paid tribute to Shastri, India’s second Prime Minister, calling him a model of integrity and humility. Remembering his leadership during challenging times, Modi praised his slogan “Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan”, saying it continues to reflect India’s strength in both defense and agriculture.
The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of Swadeshi, urging people to support local industries and indigenous products. He stated that choosing Indian-made goods would serve as a real tribute to both leaders, who championed economic self-reliance.
Mahatma Gandhi was born in Porbandar, Gujarat, in 1869, and went on to lead India’s non-violent struggle for independence. Lal Bahadur Shastri, born in Mughalsarai, Uttar Pradesh, in 1904, took office as Prime Minister after Jawaharlal Nehru’s passing and led the nation through the 1965 war with Pakistan.
Ceremonies, cleanliness drives, and memorial gatherings took place across the country to mark the day, with leaders and citizens alike remembering the timeless messages left behind by two of India’s most respected figures.
