PM Modi Officially Invited to G7 Summit by Canada’s New PM Mark Carney, Signals Thaw in Bilateral Ties

New Delhi/Ottawa: Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, held a phone conversation with Canada’s newly elected Prime Minister Mark J. Carney and congratulated him on his recent electoral victory. During the call, PM Carney extended an official invitation to PM Modi to attend the upcoming G7 Summit, which is scheduled to take place later this month in Kananaskis, Canada.

Expressing his delight, PM Modi shared the development on social media, stating, “Pleased to speak with Canadian Prime Minister Mark J. Carney. I congratulated him on his recent election win and thanked him for the invitation to the G7 Summit to be held later this month in Kananaskis.”

PM Modi emphasized that India and Canada—two vibrant democracies with strong people-to-people connections—are ready to work together with renewed energy, grounded in mutual respect and shared interests. He also expressed eagerness to meet Prime Minister Carney at the summit and said he looks forward to their interaction on the global stage.

This conversation is being viewed as a positive step toward mending strained ties between the two countries. India and Canada have shared longstanding cultural and economic bonds, and such high-level diplomatic engagement may open the door to deeper cooperation. The upcoming G7 Summit is expected to provide an important platform for dialogue on global and regional matters.

The Group of Seven (G7) comprises the world’s leading advanced economies—Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States—with participation from the European Union (EU), International Monetary Fund (IMF), World Bank, and the United Nations (UN).

Tensions between India and Canada had escalated in September 2023, when former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused Indian agents of involvement in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India dismissed the allegations as baseless and politically motivated.

Canada had called for an investigation, but no concrete evidence has emerged so far. The diplomatic rift led to a significant deterioration in bilateral relations. With the change in government, newly elected PM Mark Carney has voiced his commitment to restoring relations with India. Although no major breakthrough has yet occurred, the latest conversation and official G7 invite mark a shift toward rebuilding trust.
