Guwahati, December 20, 2025: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated the new integrated terminal at Lokapriya Gopinath Bardoloi International Airport (LGBIA) in Guwahati, significantly strengthening aviation infrastructure in Northeast India. During the ceremony, the Prime Minister also unveiled an 80-foot statue of Assam’s first chief minister, Gopinath Bardoloi, at the airport complex.
The airport is named after Bardoloi, a towering political figure from Assam who was posthumously conferred the Bharat Ratna by the Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led BJP government. The statue has been crafted by eminent sculptor Ram Sutar, who passed away earlier this week at the age of 101. Sutar is also renowned for designing the Statue of Unity in Gujarat, the world’s tallest statue.
The newly commissioned Integrated Terminal 2 has the capacity to handle 13.1 million passengers annually. Prime Minister Modi toured the state-of-the-art facility, which has been built at a cost of ₹4,000 crore. Officials said the total investment in the project amounts to ₹5,000 crore, with ₹1,000 crore earmarked specifically for Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facilities.
Covering an area of around 1.40 lakh square metres, the terminal’s design draws inspiration from Assam’s rich biodiversity and cultural heritage. Authorities said the upgraded airport is poised to become a major aviation hub for the Northeast and an important gateway connecting India with Southeast Asia.
