New Delhi, July 25, 2025: As Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in the Maldives for a two-day state visit, his tenure at home crossed a historic milestone. With 4,078 uninterrupted days in office, Modi has officially become India’s second-longest serving Prime Minister, surpassing Indira Gandhi, who held the position for 4,077 days between 1966 and 1977. Jawaharlal Nehru remains the longest-serving Prime Minister with over 6,000 days in office.
The BJP celebrated this achievement on Friday, calling it a testament to Modi’s enduring public mandate and political stature. Party leaders noted that this record comes as part of a larger legacy: Modi’s nearly 24-year unbroken stint leading democratically elected governments, first as Gujarat’s Chief Minister from 2001 to 2014 and then as Prime Minister from 2014 onward.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), BJP’s IT Cell head Amit Malviya highlighted a string of firsts attributed to Modi. These include being the longest-serving non-Congress Prime Minister, the first PM born after independence, the longest-serving PM from a non-Hindi-speaking state, and the only non-Congress leader to secure three consecutive terms in office. He also became the only leader since Indira Gandhi in 1971 to return to power with a full majority and remains the sole PM outside the Congress to win six straight elections as a party leader.
Top ministers echoed similar sentiments, calling Modi’s leadership a rare combination of continuity and deep public trust a blend not often seen in Indian political history. They emphasized that his tenure has brought stability and consistency, bolstered by wide-ranging electoral victories and policy direction.
Meanwhile, Modi received a ceremonial welcome in Malé, where he will be the guest of honour at the Maldives’ 60th Independence Day celebrations. He was received warmly by President Mohamed Muizzu along with the country’s top ministers. This marks Modi’s first visit to the Maldives under President Muizzu’s administration.
