New Delhi (Rajeev Sharma): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday expressed India’s firm support for renewed peace efforts in the Gaza conflict, applauding US President Donald Trump’s initiative following Hamas’s partial acceptance of a proposal to end hostilities.
Calling it a “notable advancement,” Modi said the move toward the release of hostages by Hamas is an encouraging sign and a positive direction for the region’s future. He posted on X (formerly Twitter), “India strongly supports all efforts toward a sustainable and just peace. We commend President Trump’s leadership in these crucial moments.”
The Indian Prime Minister’s remarks came after Hamas indicated willingness to release all Israeli hostages taken during the October 7, 2023 attack. The group also showed openness to relinquishing control in Gaza to other Palestinian representatives, although certain conditions outlined in the US plan still require broader consultations.
Following Hamas’s statement, President Trump called on Israel to suspend its ongoing strikes in Gaza, emphasizing that further military escalation could put the hostage release at risk. He described the current moment as a “real opportunity” for a long-term resolution.
India has consistently supported peace and stability in West Asia, maintaining close ties with both Israel and the Palestinian leadership. Officials in New Delhi said they are monitoring the developments closely and remain hopeful that diplomatic momentum will continue.
As global attention turns to the next steps, international mediators including Qatar and Egypt are expected to play a key role in advancing discussions between the involved parties.
