Ottawa (Rajeev Sharma): Prime Minister Mark Carney took part in a high-level virtual meeting on Tuesday with international partners to discuss long-term security guarantees for Ukraine, reaffirming Canada’s commitment to supporting Kyiv against Russian aggression.
The session was convened under the Coalition of the Willing and co-chaired by French President Emmanuel Macron and UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy joining to outline his country’s immediate security concerns.
During the meeting, coalition members explored frameworks for ensuring Ukraine’s defense and stability, including sustained military aid and economic support. Leaders also welcomed signals from the United States indicating its readiness to reinforce and backstop these security measures, which they described as vital for peace in Europe.
Prime Minister Carney stressed that Canada remains fully engaged in the coalition’s efforts. He pledged that Ottawa is prepared to provide “direct and scalable” military assistance as part of a broader plan to achieve a ceasefire and lay the foundation for lasting peace.
Alongside his counterparts, Carney emphasized the importance of maintaining coordinated economic pressure on Russia, including sanctions and trade restrictions, until Moscow ends its aggression.
Tuesday’s meeting marked another step in strengthening Western alignment on Ukraine as the conflict continues into its third year. Canadian officials confirmed that further discussions are planned to refine security commitments and ensure that support for Kyiv remains durable in the months ahead.
