National Times Bureau :- The state-of-the-art Neuro Science Centre being built at PGIMER Chandigarh is expected to be operational for patients by November 2025. In case the full facility cannot be opened on time, PGI officials have confirmed that OPD services will begin in the new building itself.
Deputy Director Dr. Pankaj Rai said the construction work is in its final stage. However, some delay is being caused due to technical challenges in procuring advanced medical equipment. He added that PGI is committed to offering modern and improved treatment to patients, which is why AI-based medical machines are being procured.
Recently, however, a proposal to purchase an AI-PET scanner worth ₹75 crore was rejected by the Standing Finance Committee, citing the high cost.
The new six-storey facility will house 300 beds and will combine both the Neurology and Neurosurgery departments under one roof. This is expected to significantly benefit patients, who currently have to visit different sections of the hospital for related treatments.
To staff the new center, PGIMER has requested 399 new posts, including faculty, nursing staff, paramedical workers, hospital attendants, and security personnel. Additionally, 357 posts have been proposed for the upcoming Mother and Child Care Centre.
The project was originally scheduled for completion in 2021, but rising costs and funding issues have led to repeated delays. Now, the institute hopes to launch the Neuro Science Centre by November this year, providing a major relief to patients in Chandigarh and nearby regions.
