Patiala Fake Encounter Case: High Court Seeks Replies from Punjab Govt, CBI Over Alleged Police Killing

Chandigarh, May 2, 2025: The Punjab and Haryana High Court has issued notices to the Punjab Government and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in a petition alleging a fake police encounter in Patiala, demanding their responses before the next hearing scheduled for the first week of July.

The petition, filed by advocate Navkiran Singh on behalf of the deceased’s family, claims that Jaspreet Singh, a resident of Nabha, was killed in a staged encounter by the Patiala Police on March 12 in connection with a child abduction case.

According to the victim’s family, Jaspreet had already surrendered to the police when he was fatally shot. Witnesses reportedly stated there were no gunshots heard, casting serious doubt on the police’s account. Singh cited the post-mortem report, which showed three close-range bullet wounds, to argue that this was a “premeditated killing” and not a legitimate encounter.

Adding to the controversy, the same police officers allegedly involved in the encounter were also accused of assaulting a retired army officer, Colonel Bath, and his son on the same night, a separate incident that had already stirred public outcry in Patiala.

The victim’s family is calling for an impartial investigation by the CBI, arguing that only a central agency can ensure justice and hold the guilty accountable in what they term a “cold-blooded murder.”

The High Court has asked both the Punjab Government and the CBI to submit detailed replies before the July hearing, with the case potentially setting a precedent in dealing with alleged fake encounter cases in Punjab.
