Kolkata, August 1, 2025 — A troubling incident aboard IndiGo flight 6E-138 from Mumbai to Kolkata has sparked outrage after a passenger was de-boarded and officially declared “unruly” for slapping a fellow traveller who appeared to be experiencing a panic attack mid-air.
The incident occurred Friday evening and was partially captured on video by another passenger. According to eyewitnesses, the man who was assaulted was visibly distressed and showing signs of a panic episode during the flight. As the cabin crew attempted to assist him, another passenger suddenly stood up and slapped the man, aggravating the situation rather than helping.
Video footage shows crew members quickly stepping in to separate the two and calm the distressed individual. One co-passenger can be heard rebuking the attacker, demanding an explanation for his violent actions toward someone in a clearly vulnerable state.
An IndiGo spokesperson confirmed the events to The Tribune, stating, “After the flight landed at Kolkata airport, the passenger involved in slapping the man was de-boarded and declared unruly.”
The video has since gone viral, triggering widespread condemnation on social media, with users expressing shock and anger over the lack of empathy and escalating aggression during a medical emergency.
Though IndiGo has not yet released a formal statement beyond confirming disciplinary action, it is expected to file a comprehensive report with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). As per aviation safety regulations in India, a passenger designated as “unruly” may face a temporary or permanent flying ban depending on the severity of the offense.
Mental health professionals have also weighed in, emphasizing the urgent need for greater public awareness and sensitivity toward individuals experiencing panic or anxiety attacks. “This was not only unacceptable behavior but deeply alarming,” said Dr. Anjali Bhateja, a clinical psychologist based in Delhi. “People need to be educated about how to respond appropriately in such situations.”
The DGCA has not yet commented, but the matter is under review and further action may follow.
