Palm Sunday Horror: Russian Missile Strike Kills 32 in Ukraine’s Sumy City Center

National Times Bureau, April 13, 2025: A deadly Russian missile attack on the Ukrainian city of Sumy turned Palm Sunday into a scene of horror, killing at least 32 civilians and injuring over 80 others. Among the dead were two children. The strike occurred at 10:15 a.m. local time, just as residents were gathering for the morning celebrations.

According to Ukrainian officials, two ballistic missiles carrying cluster munitions slammed into the city center, triggering widespread devastation. Witnesses described burning buildings, shattered windows, and panic in the streets.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the assault as a deliberate act of terror against civilians. He called on the international community to respond decisively, stating, “This is not just a war crime—it is an attack on our shared humanity.”

The missiles hit just 48 hours after U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in a renewed diplomatic effort to reach a ceasefire. That attempt now appears in jeopardy, as world leaders reacted with outrage. French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer both slammed the strike, describing it as a “heinous act” and “blatant disregard for human life.”

The International Criminal Court has launched an investigation into the use of cluster munitions, which are banned under international law due to their indiscriminate impact, especially on civilian populations.

As rescue crews continue to search for survivors beneath the rubble, Ukraine mourns yet another devastating chapter in a war that shows no sign of slowing.
