Pakistan’s Top Javelin Coach Salman Iqbal Receives Lifetime Ban Over Punjab Athletics Violations

Islamabad, October 12, 2025: Salman Iqbal, the long-serving coach of Pakistan’s premier javelin thrower Arshad Nadeem, has been banned for life by the Pakistan Amateur Athletics Federation (PAAF) for allegedly violating the constitution of the Punjab Athletics Association, where he holds the position of President.

The lifetime ban bars Iqbal from participating in any athletics activities, including coaching or holding office at any level. The PAAF cited procedural violations during the August elections of the Punjab body as the reason for the action.

An inquiry committee, formed in mid-September, recommended the ban on October 10, a day after Iqbal submitted his response to the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) regarding Nadeem’s disappointing performance at the World Athletics Championship in Tokyo. The PSB had also sought detailed accounts of expenses incurred for the athlete’s training and international travel.

Iqbal, who has been mentoring Arshad for several years, revealed that the Pakistan Amateur Athletics Federation had largely distanced itself from Nadeem’s affairs for the past year. He also stated that he relied on personal funds and support from friends to ensure that Nadeem could train in South Africa and recover from a calf muscle injury.

The decision has generated debate in Pakistan’s athletics circles, reflecting ongoing friction between the federation, coaches, and athletes.
