Surat/Ahmedabad, April 25, 2025: In a significant crackdown across Gujarat, over 1,000 illegal Bangladeshi immigrants have been detained by authorities in the cities of Ahmedabad and Surat. This operation, led by Gujarat’s Minister of State for Home, Harsh Sanghavi, is part of a larger initiative to target illegal immigration in the state.
The majority of those detained are accused of entering India with fake documents, allegedly sourced from West Bengal. Authorities have warned that anyone involved in harboring such immigrants will face strict legal consequences. Sanghavi also emphasized that those still residing illegally in Gujarat should surrender to the authorities voluntarily to avoid arrest and deportation.
“We are working to identify and arrest individuals who are in the country without valid documentation, especially those who have overstayed their visas,” Sanghavi said. The ongoing investigation is also targeting the criminal networks involved in producing counterfeit documents that facilitated these illegal entries.
The operation, which began in Ahmedabad and Surat, also focuses on deporting the detained individuals to Bangladesh. According to sources, authorities are in the process of confirming the nationalities of those detained and are coordinating with border authorities for swift deportations.
The crackdown follows a series of measures taken by the government to address the issue of illegal immigration, which has been a growing concern in several parts of India. In addition to the Bangladeshi nationals, the state government has also ordered Pakistani nationals residing illegally in Gujarat to leave the state, in line with recent security decisions made by the Cabinet Committee on Security.
Authorities are continuing their operations in other areas of Gujarat to ensure that individuals without proper documentation are removed from the state, signaling a broader effort to clamp down on illegal immigration across India.
