Amritsar (National Times): Today marks the 41st anniversary of the tragic attack on Sachkhand Sri Harmandir Sahib by the Indian Army on June 1, 1984. On this day, the Indian Army surrounded the Sachkhand Sri Harmandir Sahib complex and launched a small-scale attack, aimed at gathering intelligence about the weapons held by the Sikhs inside.
During this assault, Bhai Mahinga Singh Babbar, the first Singh stationed at Baba Atal Sahib within the complex, attained martyrdom. Bhai Mahinga Singh Babbar, along with several other Sikhs, sacrificed their lives on this day. To honor their memory, an Akhand Path Sahib was organized at Gurdwara Atal Sahib, and its Bhog ceremony was held today.
Addressing the congregation, Singh Sahib Giani Malkit Singh and other prominent Sikh personalities described the attack on Sachkhand Sri Harmandir Sahib on June 1, 1984, as a dark chapter in Sikh history. They remembered the bravery and martyrdom of Bhai Mahinga Singh Babbar, who fearlessly laid down his life to protect Sikh values.
The Indian Army’s attack also resulted in damage to a Saroop of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, which was injured during the assault. The holy Saroop will be presented for darshan to the Sangat tomorrow morning. The Sikh community, while commemorating this painful event, has called for justice and urged the government to ensure such incidents are never repeated.
