New Delhi (Rajeev Sharma): Prime Minister Narendra Modi used the occasion of Constitution Day on Wednesday to remind citizens that national progress depends as much on responsibility as on the rights enshrined in the country’s founding document.
In a message shared with people across the country, the Prime Minister urged every Indian to consciously uphold the duties outlined in the Constitution, describing them as the “pillar that sustains democratic strength.” He encouraged schools, colleges and institutions to mark the day by acknowledging young adults who have recently become eligible to vote, saying that welcoming new voters into the democratic fold is essential for a healthy electoral culture.
Modi also invoked Mahatma Gandhi, noting that the Father of the Nation consistently maintained that rights are meaningful only when accompanied by the diligent performance of duties. He said India’s developmental journey—socially, economically and institutionally—relies on citizens placing collective interest above individual convenience.
Reflecting on the nation’s future, the Prime Minister said the choices made today will have enduring consequences for coming generations. As India works toward the goal of becoming a developed nation, he urged people to keep their duties “front and centre” to ensure steady and inclusive growth.
In a separate message on X, Modi reiterated that while the Constitution empowers citizens with fundamental rights, it equally expects them to contribute to the nation’s wellbeing. He also offered tributes to the framers of the Constitution, saying their wisdom continues to illuminate India’s path toward a more capable and prosperous future.
