Nova Scotia Teen Dies After Bicycle Attack by Three Dogs, Community Grieves Loss

Welshtown, N.S.: A community in Nova Scotia is in mourning after a 13-year-old boy lost his life following a vicious attack by three dogs while riding his bicycle.

The victim, identified as Drew Nickerson, was attacked shortly after 5 p.m. on Saturday on Upper Sandy Cove Road in Welshtown, around 12 kilometres north of Shelburne, according to police. Emergency services rushed to the scene, and Drew was airlifted by LifeFlight helicopter to a hospital in Halifax, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Police said the dogs involved in the incident were three large-breed animals. Following the attack, the dogs were euthanized by a veterinarian. The RCMP confirmed on Tuesday that the investigation into the incident is ongoing and that no charges have been laid so far.

Drew was a Grade 8 student at Shelburne Regional High School. In a statement, the Tri-County Regional Centre for Education said his death has deeply affected students and staff, adding that counselling and support services have been made available at the school.

An online fundraiser set up to support Drew’s mother includes a tribute written by a family member, describing him as a kind-hearted and adventurous child who loved the outdoors and was cherished by friends and family alike.

As the investigation continues, the tragedy has sparked renewed concern about public safety and dog control in rural communities, with residents expressing shock and sorrow over the loss of a young life.
