NHAI to Introduce QR Code Boards and New Toll Rules on Highways

National Times Bureau :- The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is making highways smarter and safer for travelers. From November 15, 2025, new signboards with QR codes will appear along major highways, and toll payment rules will also change.

These QR code boards will give travelers more than just directions. By scanning the code with a smartphone, people can get instant details about the highway, toll plaza contacts, resident engineers, patrol teams, and the Highway Emergency Helpline number 1033. This will make it easier to get help in case of emergencies.

The boards will be installed at important points, including highway starts and ends, toll plazas, rest areas, and truck parking zones, ensuring the information is always within reach for travelers.

Along with the boards, toll payment rules are being updated. Vehicles without a working FASTag or facing technical issues will need to pay 1.25 times the toll via UPI, and cash payments will be charged double. The idea is to encourage digital payments and reduce cash handling.

According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, these changes aim to make travel on highways safer, faster, and more convenient. The move also supports the Digital India mission by promoting connected and smart highways.
