California, USA (National Times): A new school named in honour of renowned Punjabi human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra was officially inaugurated in the United States, marking a significant tribute to his legacy. The opening ceremony was attended by his wife, Parmjit Kaur, and daughter, Navkiran Kaur Khalra, alongside a large gathering of community members and guests.
Jaswant Singh Khalra, known globally for exposing mass human rights violations in Punjab during the 1980s and 1990s, continues to inspire social justice movements across the diaspora. The newly inaugurated school stands as a symbol of his enduring fight for truth, justice, and human dignity.
Following the inauguration, school management revealed that the institution will go beyond conventional academics. “This school will not only offer formal education but will also instil in children the values of standing up against injustice, defending human rights, and working for humanity—principles that Jaswant Singh Khalra lived and died for,” a spokesperson said.
The establishment of the school comes at a time of renewed interest in Khalra’s life, following recent public discourse and film portrayals of his work uncovering the extrajudicial cremations of thousands of Sikhs in Punjab.
