Nepal Temporarily Seals Border With India Ahead of Bihar Assembly Elections

Patna, November 9, 2025 — Nepal has shut several border crossings with India for 72 hours to ensure peaceful polling during the second phase of the Bihar Assembly elections scheduled for Tuesday. The decision came into effect on Saturday evening and will remain in force until 6 p.m. on November 11.

According to officials, the temporary border closure is part of security measures to prevent any illegal movement of people, money, or goods that could influence the voting process. Border points in Nepal’s Mahottari, Sarlahi, and Rautahat districts have been sealed, halting both vehicular and pedestrian movement except for emergencies.

Authorities from both sides including India’s Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) and Nepal’s local police have stepped up joint surveillance along sensitive routes. Patrolling has been intensified at bridges, highways, and check-posts connecting Bihar’s border districts to Nepal.

The Election Commission had requested enhanced vigilance along international borders after intelligence inputs suggested possible attempts to smuggle cash and liquor into poll-bound areas. Bihar’s Home Department also issued directives to maintain law and order and prevent any disturbances.

The second phase of voting will cover 122 constituencies across 20 districts in Bihar, where over 3.7 crore voters are eligible to cast their ballots. The first phase, held earlier this month, saw polling in 121 constituencies.

Officials said the border will reopen on Tuesday evening once polling concludes.
