DARCHULA (Rajeev Sharma): A fresh landslide in Nepal’s Darchula district has triggered concern over a possible flash-flood threat, just days after devastating floods and landslides caused widespread destruction in the region.
The latest incident was reported at Bhattar in Api Himal Rural Municipality, where a large volume of debris has fallen into the Chaulani River, partially obstructing its natural flow.
Officials said the situation remains unstable, with further landslides still possible in the area. If more debris enters the river, the obstruction could become complete, potentially causing water to accumulate upstream.
Authorities have warned that a sudden breach of such a blockage could send a powerful surge downstream, putting communities located along the riverbanks and in lower-lying areas at risk.
The District Administration Office in Darchula has asked residents living near the river to remain especially cautious and avoid taking unnecessary risks. People have also been advised to closely monitor official warnings and remain prepared to move to safer locations if the situation deteriorates.
Security personnel have been positioned in the affected area to alert residents and monitor developments. Teams have also been kept ready to respond should an emergency arise.
The latest landslide has added to concerns in parts of Nepal that are still dealing with the impact of recent extreme weather, with authorities maintaining heightened vigilance over unstable slopes and swollen rivers.
