NDA Picks CP Radhakrishnan as Vice Presidential Candidate

New Delhi, August 17, 2025 — The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) on Sunday declared Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan as its nominee for the Vice Presidential election.

The announcement followed internal consultations among senior leaders of the ruling coalition. Sources said the decision was unanimous, with the alliance projecting Radhakrishnan as a consensus figure who combines long political experience with administrative expertise.

Radhakrishnan, a veteran BJP leader from Tamil Nadu, has been serving as the Governor of Maharashtra since 2023. He earlier represented Coimbatore in the Lok Sabha and has been active in organizational roles within the party for decades. His candidature reflects the NDA’s effort to balance regional representation with national responsibilities.

The Vice President of India is elected by members of both Houses of Parliament through a secret ballot. The Election Commission is expected to announce the detailed schedule soon. The winner will serve a five-year term and also act as the ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.

Political observers note that with the NDA holding a comfortable majority in Parliament, Radhakrishnan’s path to the Vice Presidency appears assured, unless the Opposition fields a joint candidate and mobilizes cross-party support.

If elected, he will succeed Jagdeep Dhankhar, who has been serving as Vice President since 2022.
