NCERT to Introduce Modules on Operation Sindoor to Highlight India’s Military Prowess

New Delhi (Rajeev Sharma): In a move aimed at instilling awareness of national security and military achievements among students, the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) is preparing two educational modules centered on Operation Sindoor, India’s recent cross-border counter-terror operation against targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

According to senior officials from the Ministry of Education, the initiative is designed to familiarize schoolchildren with India’s military capabilities and the response to terrorism emanating from across the border.

“Two special modules are currently under development. The first will be tailored for students in Classes 3 to 8, while the second will cater to Classes 9 to 12. Each module will be 8 to 10 pages long, highlighting India’s strategic military achievements and how the country responded to cross-border terrorism through Operation Sindoor,” said a ministry official, speaking on condition of anonymity.

NCERT periodically develops thematic modules to complement the existing curriculum and address contemporary issues. As of June 2025, the council has released 16 such modules, covering themes like Viksit Bharat, Nari Shakti Vandan, Chandrayaan Utsav, and the G20 Summit.

Future modules in the pipeline include topics such as Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment), the horrors of the Partition, and India’s advancements in space exploration, including Chandrayaan, Aditya L1, and the journey of astronaut Subhanshu Shukla to the International Space Station.

Operation Sindoor was launched in the early hours of May 7 as a swift retaliatory strike after the Pahalgam terror attack, which left 26 civilians dead. The operation targeted nine terror-related and military installations across the border, triggering a brief but intense four-day military standoff. Hostilities ceased on May 10 following mutual de-escalation.

Interestingly, NCERT’s latest Class 8 social science textbook also makes a passing reference to modern military tactics, drawing a comparison between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s night raid on Mughal general Shaista Khan and present-day surgical strikes.

The upcoming Operation Sindoor modules are part of a broader push by education authorities to build civic understanding and national pride among students through exposure to real-world historical and strategic events.
