CALGARY (Rajeev Sharma): Shock and grief have swept through the Punjabi community in Calgary after a married couple, Ekamveer Singh and his wife Jasmine Kaur, were found dead under suspicious circumstances in the Redstone neighbourhood of northeast Calgary.
The couple originally belonged to Chaukiman village near Jagraon in Punjab and had been living in Calgary for some time. Police were called to their residence late at night following a report of a disturbance in the area. Upon arrival, officers found both individuals seriously injured inside the home. One of them was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other later died in hospital.
The Calgary Police Service (CPS) has classified the deaths as suspicious and confirmed that a full investigation is underway. The Homicide Unit is examining the case, and autopsies have been conducted, though officials have not yet released the cause of death or confirmed whether the incident was a homicide, suicide, or the result of another factor.
Investigators are reviewing security camera footage, forensic evidence, and witness statements from the area. Police have stated that they are exploring all possible angles and are not currently naming any suspects. Authorities have also clarified that there is no confirmed link between this case and other recent crimes involving South Asian residents in the city.
The tragedy has deeply affected both the local community in Calgary and their home village in Punjab. Relatives and villagers in Chaukiman and Jagraon expressed disbelief and sorrow after learning of the deaths. Neighbours in Redstone described the couple as quiet and well-settled and said the incident has left residents fearful and concerned about safety in the area.
Community leaders have urged people to avoid speculation and allow the investigation to take its course. Police have appealed to the public for help, asking anyone with information or relevant CCTV or dashcam footage from the Redstone area around the time of the incident to contact Calgary Police Service or Crime Stoppers.
