Myanmar, March 28, 2025: A series of six devastating earthquakes, including one of 7.7 magnitude, struck central Myanmar on Friday at 12:50 PM local time, killing at least 144 people and injuring 732, according to state-run broadcaster MRTV.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed the epicenters were northwest of Sagaing city, with depths ranging from 10 to 30 km. In response, Myanmar’s military chief Min Aung Hlaing has declared an emergency and appealed for international aid.

Casualties and Damage in Myanmar
Rescue workers are struggling to cope as the death toll rises. In Naypyidaw, at least 20 people have died in a hospital, with authorities fearing it could become a mass casualty site.

A mosque in Mandalay collapsed during prayers, causing multiple deaths, while a fire at a city university worsened the devastation.

Widespread Impact Across Asia
The powerful tremors and aftershocks were felt across Thailand, China, India, Vietnam, and Bangladesh.

Thailand: Bangkok’s metro and rail services were suspended as buildings shook. A collapsed structure killed three people. Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra declared an emergency and cut short his Phuket visit.

China: Yunnan province recorded a 7.9 magnitude quake, but no casualties were reported.

India: Tremors were felt in Kolkata and Manipur, with a 4.4-magnitude quake recorded.
