Murshidabad Clashes: Yogi Adityanath Says 'Hindus Were Killed', Alleges Violence Over Waqf Act Was Instigated

Lucknow (National Times): Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Sunday alleged that violence in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district was instigated in response to recent actions related to the Waqf Act, claiming that Hindus were targeted and killed. Referring to the incident, Yogi Adityanath stated, “Three Hindus were dragged out of their homes and killed.” He emphasized that the victims were Dalits and underprivileged individuals who, he claimed, stood to benefit the most from the land-related reforms.

Criticizing the Waqf land occupation, he remarked, “This is the same country where lakhs of acres of land have been taken over in the name of Waqf without any supporting documents or revenue records. Now that the Waqf Amendment Bill has been passed and action is being taken, violence is being provoked.”

What is the matter of Murshidabad Violence?

Earlier this week, three people, including a father-son duo, were killed in Murshidabad during clashes allegedly linked to protests over the Waqf law. The district has a Muslim-majority population, and the unrest prompted swift law enforcement action.

So far, 150 individuals have been arrested by the West Bengal police in connection with the violence. In response to the escalation, a special bench of the Calcutta High Court ordered the immediate deployment of central forces, following which BSF personnel were deployed and restored order in the area.

Speaking to the media, BSF DIG Nilotpal Kumar Pandey said, “The situation remains tense, and people are fearful, but it is under control now. Conditions are improving, and with combined efforts, we hope normalcy returns soon.”
