Shimla (Rajeev Sharma): The southwest monsoon has regained momentum across Himachal Pradesh, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting persistent rainfall over the coming days and cautioning residents about possible weather-related hazards. Several districts have been placed under a Yellow Alert as the state prepares for another spell of heavy showers.
According to the IMD, light to moderate rainfall is expected across most parts of the hill state on July 17 and 18, while the intensity is likely to increase between July 19 and July 21, when isolated locations may witness heavy downpours.
Among the districts under weather watch are Kangra, Mandi, Shimla, Kullu, Chamba, Hamirpur, Solan and Sirmaur. Officials have warned that continuous rainfall could trigger landslides, flash floods, mudslides and rockfalls, particularly in vulnerable mountainous areas.
Heavy overnight rain affected parts of Kangra district, where several neighbourhoods experienced power disruptions after strong showers lashed the region. Restoration work was initiated by electricity department teams as weather conditions allowed.
The Meteorological Department has advised residents living near rivers, streams and seasonal drains to remain alert, as water levels could rise rapidly during periods of intense rainfall. Local administrations have also been instructed to keep emergency response teams on standby.
Tourists and commuters travelling through the state’s hill roads have been urged to exercise caution. Authorities have recommended checking road and weather updates before beginning any journey, especially on routes known for landslide activity during the monsoon season.
Despite the return of rain, temperatures remained relatively high in some areas before the weather changed. Una recorded the highest daytime temperature at 38°C, while Mandi reported a maximum of 35.2°C. Meteorologists expect temperatures to gradually decline as cloud cover and rainfall become more widespread.
The IMD has also appealed to farmers and orchard owners to plan agricultural operations in line with the latest forecasts, as prolonged rainfall may affect harvesting and field activities.
With monsoon activity expected to remain active for several days, officials have advised the public to stay informed through official weather bulletins and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rain.
