Chandigarh, June 29, 2025 – The Southwest Monsoon has swept across the entire country nine days ahead of schedule, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced on Sunday, even as it issued a heavy rain alert for Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh until July 1.
The IMD’s special weather bulletin warned of light to moderate rain across most regions and heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places in the affected states over the next three days.
A major weather system, including an upper air cyclonic circulation over north Haryana and its surrounding areas, extending up to 1.5 km above sea level, is fueling this active monsoon phase.
The department forecast very heavy rainfall exceeding 12 cm in parts of northern and eastern Punjab and Haryana, including Chandigarh. Districts like Yamuna Nagar, Ambala, Karnal, Panipat, Sonipat, Kurukshetra, Kaithal, Patiala, Sangrur, and Rupnagar are expected to be impacted.
Authorities warned of possible damage to harvested crops lying in open fields, waterlogging in low-lying areas, traffic snarls, rising river levels, and risks to weak structures. Poor visibility may further increase travel times.
Residents and farmers have been urged to take precautions, including:
Avoiding storage of harvested crops in open spaces
Ensuring proper drainage around homes and fields
Staying clear of waterlogged zones and fragile structures
Delaying application of fertilizers and pesticides during rains
Driving cautiously and avoiding shelter under trees during storms
The IMD advised farmers to temporarily halt field operations during the intense rain period and urged citizens to stay tuned to district-specific forecasts.
Meanwhile, Delhi enjoyed pleasant weather with light showers on Sunday morning. Rain was also recorded in parts of Uttar Pradesh, with Moradabad seeing heavy downpours. In Rajasthan, Mount Abu witnessed rain and dense fog, while Shimla turned colder following rainfall. Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district also experienced showers, with video clips of rain emerging from various regions.
The IMD has forecast the possibility of thunderstorms and lightning in multiple districts across these states in the coming days.
