Modi Welcomes Putin in Delhi as Russian President Begins First India Visit Since Ukraine Conflict

New Delhi, December 4, 2025: Prime Minister Narendra Modi received Russian President Vladimir Putin with a warm embrace at Delhi’s Palam airport on Thursday evening, marking the start of Putin’s first visit to India in more than four years. The two leaders exchanged hugs, handshakes and smiles before heading to a private dinner hosted by the Prime Minister.

Putin’s arrival comes ahead of the 23rd Annual India-Russia Summit, scheduled for Friday at Hyderabad House. This is his first trip to India since the conflict in Ukraine began. His previous visit was in December 2021. The Russian President is visiting New Delhi on PM Modi’s invitation.

According to Russia’s state broadcaster TASS, Putin departed for India earlier in the day and is expected to hold wide-ranging talks covering trade, economic cooperation, scientific and technological collaboration, and cultural exchanges.

The summit will take place on Friday, with both leaders set to focus on strengthening defence ties, expanding energy partnerships, and boosting bilateral trade. Modi will also host Putin and the Russian delegation for a working lunch. Before the summit discussions begin, President Droupadi Murmu will welcome Putin with a ceremonial reception at Rashtrapati Bhavan at 11 am.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov has indicated that the agenda may include potential Russian supply of Su-57 fighter jets to India. Putin is also expected to brief Modi on ongoing U.S. attempts to shape a peace proposal aimed at ending the war in Ukraine.

The visit is being closely watched as both countries seek to reinforce their longstanding strategic partnership amid shifting geopolitical realities.
