Mistissini, Quebec (Rajeev Sharma): The Cree Nation of Mistissini, located in Quebec’s northern Baie-James region, was placed under lockdown on Thursday morning following a fatal shooting incident that resulted in multiple deaths.
Chief Michael Petawabano confirmed the lockdown in a statement, saying the decision was taken in the interest of public safety after what he described as a “serious shooting incident.” He said the safety and security of community members remain the highest priority.
Residents have been asked to stay inside their homes and keep their doors locked until further notice. All community buildings, including schools, offices and other public facilities, have been closed. Travel in and out of the community has also been restricted.
The Eeyou Eenou Police Force, along with the Sûreté du Québec, is investigating the incident. Authorities have not released further details about the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
“Our hearts are heavy with grief for the lives lost and the families affected by this tragedy,” Petawabano said. He urged residents to remain calm, stay indoors and cooperate fully with police as the investigation continues.
The lockdown will remain in effect until law enforcement officials determine it is safe for the community to resume normal activities. Officials said updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
