Edmonton (Rajeev Sharma): Alberta’s Minister of Indigenous Relations, Rajan Sawhney, met with Treaty 8 First Nations leadership today, marking what she described as a “significant step forward” in strengthening government-to-government relations.

The meeting brought together Grand Chief Trevor Mercredi, Deputy Grand Chief Ramona Horseman, and several other community leaders. Sawhney acknowledged the importance of such discussions, noting that while they can be challenging, they are essential for building trust and advancing meaningful progress.

“We reaffirmed our commitment to ensuring First Nations voices are not only heard but also reflected in the decisions impacting their communities,” Sawhney said after the meeting.

Leaders raised a number of pressing concerns, highlighting both regional priorities and broader issues tied to Canada’s national relationship with Indigenous peoples. Sawhney emphasized that Alberta remains committed to working in partnership to address these challenges and advance shared priorities.

According to the minister, the dialogue is part of an ongoing effort to establish stronger, more formal agreements with Treaty 8 Nations. She added that future meetings will focus on creating structured working groups to ensure concerns are translated into action.

“The way forward must be grounded in collaboration, respect, and a long-term vision,” Sawhney said, stressing that today’s conversation serves as a foundation for deeper engagement in the months ahead.
