Mining Firm Ordered to Pay $360,000 After Worker Dies in Alberta Mine Accident

Warburg, Alberta (Rajeev Sharma): An Alberta-based mining company has been directed to pay $360,000 following a fatal workplace accident at one of its operations, after admitting it failed to meet its legal responsibility to protect the safety of an employee.

Prairie Mines & Royalty ULC pleaded guilty in the Leduc Court of Justice to a charge under Alberta’s Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act. The conviction relates to a workplace incident that claimed the life of a worker at a mine near Warburg in November 2023. Prosecutors withdrew 11 additional charges as part of the court proceedings.

According to officials, the worker was carrying out maintenance work involving the removal of accumulated water and ice from a pipeline when an ice blockage suddenly broke free. The dislodged ice struck the employee, causing injuries that proved fatal.

Rather than imposing a traditional fine, the court issued a creative sentence requiring the company to invest $360,000 into improving mine safety across the province.

The funds will be provided to the Alberta Mine Safety Association, which will use the money to conduct research, establish industry-wide safety practices and develop specialized training programs focused on safe water-removal operations in mining environments.

Provincial authorities said Alberta’s Occupational Health and Safety legislation places a legal obligation on employers to maintain safe workplaces and reduce risks to workers. Investigations under the Act may result in charges when safety failures contribute to serious injuries or fatalities.

Both Prairie Mines & Royalty ULC and the Crown have up to 30 days to appeal the court’s decision or the penalty imposed. The case also serves as a reminder of the importance of rigorous safety procedures during hazardous maintenance work in industrial settings.
