New Delhi (Rajeev Sharma): The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has once again raised alarm over the recruitment of Indian nationals into the Russian army, cautioning citizens against accepting such offers and calling the situation dangerous and deeply concerning.
Responding to widespread media inquiries, MEA spokesperson Shri Randhir Jaiswal stated that the Indian government is aware of recent cases involving Indians being drawn into Russia’s military structure, and has been actively engaging with Russian authorities both in Delhi and Moscow to put a stop to the practice.
Repeated Warnings, Yet Rising Cases
The spokesperson noted that over the past year, the government has issued multiple warnings outlining the serious risks involved in joining foreign military forces. “We have consistently cautioned Indian nationals about the dangers involved in such actions,” Jaiswal said.
He further confirmed that India has formally requested Russia to halt this recruitment process and facilitate the safe return of those already inducted. Indian embassies and officials are also in touch with the families of those affected.
Strong Advisory to the Public
In a renewed advisory, the MEA has urged all Indian citizens to avoid any contact or agreement related to enlistment in the Russian military. The ministry emphasized that such involvement not only jeopardizes individual safety but also violates established international norms regarding foreign military participation.
“This is not just a risky path — it is one that can lead to long-term complications, both legal and personal,” the advisory warned.
Rising Global Tensions Add to Risks
The development comes amid increased global concern over the use of foreign nationals in military conflicts. Russia has been reported to have recruited individuals from various countries as it grapples with extended deployments and manpower issues. Analysts believe that financial incentives and job promises are being used to attract vulnerable populations, including those from South Asia.
For Indian nationals, this raises significant red flags. “People may be lured with the promise of income or opportunities abroad, only to find themselves trapped in conflict zones with no way out,” a senior official commented anonymously.
Diplomatic Channels Activated
According to MEA sources, Indian diplomats have taken up the matter at the highest levels with Russian counterparts, stressing the urgent need to bring back those who may have been misled or recruited under pressure.
“Our efforts are focused on ensuring the safety and well-being of Indian citizens. We are using every diplomatic channel available,” said the official spokesperson.
