MEA Confirms 2,417 Indians Deported from US Since January, Emphasises Legal Migration

New Delhi, September 26, 2025: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Friday confirmed that 2,417 Indian nationals have been deported or repatriated from the United States since January 2025. Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal highlighted India’s firm stance against illegal migration, stressing the government’s focus on promoting safe and legal channels for migration.

“Since January, 2,417 Indian nationals have been deported or repatriated from the United States. We remain committed to encouraging legal pathways and stand firmly against illegal migration,” Jaiswal said during the weekly media briefing.

Explaining the verification process, he noted that individuals without legal status abroad are returned to India only after thorough background checks and confirmation of nationality. “Whenever cases come with proper documentation, we verify nationality, confirm details, and then take them back,” he said.

Jaiswal also addressed fraudulent practices associated with illegal migration, stating that the government has been cracking down on agents and networks misleading citizens with false promises. Advisories are regularly issued to warn Indians about dubious job offers, particularly in Southeast Asia.

Highlighting cooperation with U.S. authorities, he noted that India has closely coordinated with Washington to facilitate the deportation of Indians lacking legal status. Updating previous figures shared on May 29, Jaiswal said that around 1,080 Indians had returned since January, with approximately 62 percent travelling on commercial flights.

On student matters, Jaiswal assured that the welfare of Indian students abroad remains a priority. Responding to reports of revised U.S. guidelines for Student and Exchange Visitor visas, he said, “While visa issuance is a sovereign decision, we hope applications of Indian students are considered fairly so they can join their programs on time.”

The MEA’s statement reflects India’s dual approach of discouraging illegal migration while protecting citizens pursuing legitimate opportunities overseas.
