Massive Drug Crackdown: Punjab Police Seizes Over 1,000 Kg Heroin in Five Months

Chandigarh, July 27, 2025 — Punjab Police has made a record-breaking drug haul under the ongoing ‘Yudh Nashian Virudh’ campaign, recovering over 1,002 kilograms of heroin in less than five months since the initiative began on March 1. This massive seizure marks a major breakthrough in the state’s war against drugs, directed by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann.

Alongside the heroin haul, police have arrested 23,647 drug smugglers and registered 14,906 FIRs as part of extensive anti-drug operations, including cordon and search drives, night patrols, and raids at identified drug hotspots. These efforts are being carried out under the leadership of Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav and supervised directly by Special DGP (Law and Order) Arpit Shukla.

In addition to heroin, the police have confiscated 344 kg of opium, 182 quintals of poppy husk, 14 kg of charas, 365 kg of ganja, 6 kg of ICE (crystal meth), 30.9 lakh tablets and capsules of intoxicants, and ₹12.03 crore in drug money.

On the 148th day of the campaign alone, police teams raided 425 locations, arresting 99 drug smugglers and registering 72 FIRs. That day’s seizures included 12.9 kg of heroin, 701 grams of opium, 70,720 pills and injections, and ₹8.38 lakh in cash. The operation involved more than 1,300 police personnel, guided by 86 gazetted officers, and included checks on 443 suspicious individuals across the state.

The campaign also emphasizes rehabilitation. As part of the de-addiction effort, police convinced 78 individuals to voluntarily undergo treatment and counseling today alone.

The state’s three-pronged approach Enforcement, Deaddiction, and Prevention (EDP)—continues to intensify as authorities reaffirm their goal of making Punjab a drug-free state.
