March 2 Declared Public Holiday in Haryana for Urban Body Elections

Chandigarh, March 1, 2025: Haryana State Election Commissioner Dhanpat Singh has announced that all government offices, boards, corporations, and educational institutions will remain closed on March 2 due to local urban body elections in the state.

A notification issued by the Chief Secretary states that under Section 135B of The Representation of the People Act, 1951, employees working in trade, business, industrial establishments, or private institutions, who are voters in these elections, will receive a paid holiday. Employers are prohibited from deducting leave or making salary cuts for this day.

Paid Holiday for Factory and Commercial Workers

Factories: As per Section 52 of The Factories Act, 1948, all factories within the affected urban areas will be closed on March 2, and employees will be granted a paid holiday to cast their votes.

Shops & Commercial Establishments: Under Section 28 of The Punjab Shops and Commercial Establishments Act, 1958, all shops and commercial establishments in these areas will also remain closed, ensuring their workers get a paid holiday.

Strict Legal Action for Violations

The State Election Commissioner has directed the Labor Commissioner, Haryana, to ensure strict compliance with these orders. Any complaints against private businesses, shopkeepers, or factory owners failing to follow these rules will result in legal action under the relevant laws.
