Manipur Government Suspends Internet Services in Five Districts Amid Rising Tensions

Imphal (National Times): The Manipur government has ordered a five-day suspension of internet and mobile data services, including VSAT and VPN connections, in five key districts, Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Kakching, and Bishnupur, starting 11:45 PM on June 7, 2025.

The decision was announced through an official order issued by Commissioner-cum-Secretary (Home), N. Ashok Kumar, citing concerns over the prevailing law and order situation in the affected districts.

According to the order, there is a growing apprehension that anti-social elements may misuse social media platforms to disseminate hate messages, inflammatory videos, and false information capable of inciting public unrest and disrupting communal harmony.

“There is an imminent threat to life, public and private property, and the overall peace and tranquillity of the state. Misinformation spread via social media and mobile messaging platforms could escalate tensions and provoke violence,” the order stated.

To curb the spread of rumors and incendiary content across platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and others, the state government has invoked powers under Rule 2 of the Temporary Suspension of Telecom Services (Public Emergency or Public Safety) Rules, 2017.

The order emphasized that the restriction applies to all internet-enabled devices, including mobile phones, tablets, and computers, and extends to the use of bulk SMS services, which may be employed to mobilize agitators or incite violence.

However, the government has clarified that exemptions and whitelisting may be granted on a case-by-case basis where deemed necessary by the state authorities.

The suspension comes amid heightened tensions in Manipur, where incidents of unrest have triggered fears of communal clashes and mob violence in recent months. The state government asserts that the temporary measure is essential to maintain peace, public safety, and communal harmony.
