Srinagar: A major fire swept through the densely populated Nowpora area of Srinagar on Wednesday, damaging at least four to five houses in the narrow locality. The blaze broke out around 1:45 pm, prompting an immediate response from emergency services as fire tenders from nearby stations rushed to the spot.
Firefighters struggled with the congested lanes but managed to draw water directly from the Jhelum River to battle the flames. Deputy Director of Fire and Emergency Services, Mir Aquib, said teams were able to contain the fire within the affected cluster of homes and prevent it from spreading further.
He said that when crews arrived, multiple houses were already burning, but coordinated efforts helped bring the situation under control. A detailed assessment will be conducted once the operation concludes.
The cause of the fire remains unknown, and an investigation is underway. Fire tenders continue to remain on site to prevent any flare-ups and secure the area.
