Lok Sabha to Debate Election Reforms as Opposition Targets SIR Exercise

National Times Bureau :- The Lok Sabha is scheduled to hold a detailed discussion on election reforms today, with a major focus on the Election Commission of India’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The exercise has triggered strong objections from opposition parties, particularly the Congress, which alleges large-scale discrepancies and the removal of genuine voters.

Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi is expected to open the debate, continuing his criticism of the SIR process. Gandhi has accused the government and the ECI of creating confusion through outdated systems and putting heavy pressure on Booth Level Officers (BLOs). He earlier claimed that multiple BLOs had died due to stress during the exercise, calling the SIR “a calculated attempt to exhaust voters and enable voter manipulation.”

The government is preparing to counter these allegations during the 10-hour combined discussion allocated for both Houses of Parliament.

Alongside the debate, the day’s agenda includes key parliamentary business. BJP MPs Radha Mohan Singh and Virendra Singh will table four reports of the Standing Committee on Defence linked to action taken on recommendations for the 2025-26 budget of the Defence Ministry. UPPL MP Joyanta Basumatary and BJP MP Rodmal Nagar will present action-taken reports of the Standing Committee on Water Resources, including reviews of the Upper Yamuna cleaning projects and the 2024-25 Jal Shakti budget. The Winter Session, which began on December 1, will continue until December 19.
