Lok Sabha Adjourns Sine Die, Let’s Look At The Key Bills Passed in The Monsoon Session

New Delhi, August 21, 2025: The Monsoon Session of Parliament ended on Thursday with the Lok Sabha being adjourned sine die by Speaker Om Birla. The session, which began on July 21, witnessed frequent protests and disruptions, limiting effective debate to just 37 hours. Despite the chaos, the House managed to pass 12 significant legislations.

Among the major bills was the Merchant Shipping Bill, 2025, which seeks to update maritime laws in line with international standards, focusing on safety and environmental protection. The Indian Ports Bill, 2025 was also cleared, replacing the colonial-era framework with a modern law on port governance.

Other important economic measures included the Income-tax Bill, 2025 and the Taxation Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2025, along with the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2025, which seeks to reform India’s mining sector.

In the sports sector, the National Sports Governance Bill, 2025 and the National Anti-Doping (Amendment) Bill, 2025 were passed, introducing accountability and global standards for sporting bodies and athlete welfare. The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025, another notable law, sets rules for real-money gaming while promoting e-sports and social gaming.

Education and state-level legislations also featured, including the Indian Institutes of Management (Amendment) Bill, 2025, the Readjustment of Representation of Scheduled Tribes in Assembly Constituencies of Goa Bill, 2025, the Manipur Goods and Services Tax (Amendment) Bill, 2025, and the Manipur Appropriation (No. 2) Bill, 2025.

Speaker Birla expressed concern over the disruptions that curtailed discussions on these legislations. “The House could function only for 37 hours in this session,” he observed, urging lawmakers to contribute more constructively in future sittings.

The Monsoon Session concluded without a fixed date for the next sitting, marking its adjournment sine die.
