New Delhi, May 27, 2025: The University of Liverpool is set to open a full-fledged campus in Bengaluru, becoming the second UK-based Russell Group university to establish an overseas presence in India. The move comes after receiving formal approval from the University Grants Commission (UGC), with classes scheduled to begin in August 2026.
The announcement was made during an official ceremony where Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan handed over the Letter of Intent to university representatives, applauding the collaboration as a step forward in India’s aim to internationalize higher education under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
According to officials, the Bengaluru campus will initially offer undergraduate and postgraduate programs in high-demand disciplines, including Business Management, Accounting and Finance, Computer Science, Biomedical Sciences, and Game Design.
This initiative follows the University of Southampton, another Russell Group member, which earlier opened a campus in Gurugram. UGC Chairman Prof. M. Jagadesh Kumar said that such institutions are required to reinvest their profits generated in India back into the Indian education system, ensuring sustainable academic partnerships.
The expansion is part of a larger national plan to attract top global universities to set up campuses within India, offering Indian students globally recognized degrees without the cost of going abroad. It also signifies deepening academic ties between India and the UK amid increasing demand for quality international education domestically.
