Kulgam Encounter Enters Day 2; 2 Terrorists, 2 Soldiers Killed

Kulgam (Rajeev Sharma): The gunbattle between security forces and militants in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kulgam district entered its second day on Tuesday, with two soldiers and two terrorists confirmed dead so far. The intense confrontation, which began on Monday afternoon, continues as security forces work to neutralize the remaining militants.

Officials confirmed that the operation resumed early on Tuesday after a brief pause in the firing overnight. “The operation has restarted this morning after a brief lull. Security forces are actively engaged with the militants,” an official statement read.

Casualties and Ongoing Operation

Two terrorists, including one suspected to be a Pakistani national, have been killed during the fierce gunfight. In addition, two Indian soldiers lost their lives, while an Army major sustained injuries. The Army has not yet identified the fallen soldiers, but the injured officer is being treated at a military hospital, according to sources.

The encounter began when security forces, acting on intelligence inputs, launched an operation in the Kulgam area to flush out militants believed to be involved in local insurgent activities. The militants reportedly took refuge in a house, where they have been engaged in a standoff with the security forces ever since.

Security Forces’ Response

The area around the encounter site has been cordoned off by security forces to prevent the militants from escaping and to ensure public safety. Special forces, including the Rashtriya Rifles and the Jammu and Kashmir Police’s Special Operations Group (SOG), have been deployed to support the operation. Heavy firing has been reported, and officials warn that the operation may extend throughout the day.

“We are fully committed to neutralizing the terrorists and bringing the situation under control,” said a senior officer overseeing the operation. “We urge residents in the area to stay indoors and avoid the encounter zone to ensure their safety.”

Rising Tensions in Kulgam

Kulgam has been a hotspot for militancy in the Kashmir Valley in recent years. The district has witnessed multiple encounters and attacks targeting security forces, making it a focal point of counter-insurgency operations. The latest encounter is believed to be part of an effort by security forces to curb the rising tide of militancy in the region.

Local sources suggest that the militants involved in this encounter may have links to larger terrorist organizations operating across the border. The involvement of a Pakistani national is a reminder of the ongoing cross-border terrorism that continues to challenge Indian security forces in Jammu and Kashmir.

Public Response and Security Measures

As the operation continues, the Jammu and Kashmir Police have urged locals to stay clear of the area for their safety. Authorities have placed heavy restrictions on movement in the region, and the police have warned that anyone found violating the curfew could face strict action.

“Residents are advised not to approach the area, as there is a possibility of crossfire,” a police spokesperson said. “The safety of the public is our top priority.”

The security forces are expected to maintain their vigilance in the region, with reinforcements likely to be deployed if the situation escalates. Local media reports indicate that while the gunfight has slowed in intensity, it is still ongoing, and more casualties could occur.
