Krishna Janmashtami 2025: Date, Significance, and Shubh Muhurat for Puja

National Times Bureau, Aug 14, 2025: Krishna Janmashtami, one of the most significant festivals in Hinduism, is celebrated every year with devotion and joy to mark the birth anniversary of Lord Shri Krishna. Observed on the Ashtami Tithi of Krishna Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada, the festival holds deep spiritual and cultural importance for devotees across India. This year, Krishna Janmashtami will be celebrated on August 16, 2025.

According to religious beliefs, Lord Krishna was born in Kansa’s prison in Mathura on the Ashtami Tithi of Bhadrapada month, at midnight, under the Rohini Nakshatra. Since his birth is linked with both Ashtami and Rohini Nakshatra, devotees often remain uncertain about the correct day and time to observe Janmashtami rituals.

In 2025, Ashtami Tithi and Rohini Nakshatra will not coincide. While Janmashtami according to Ashtami Tithi will be observed on August 16, those who follow Rohini Nakshatra-based traditions will celebrate it a day later, on August 17. The midnight Janmashtami Puja on August 16 will be held between 12:05 AM and 12:47 AM, giving devotees a window of 43 minutes for worship. Meanwhile, Rohini Nakshatra will commence on August 17 at 4:38 PM and conclude on August 18 at 3:17 AM, making it auspicious for those who wish to align their celebration with the Nakshatra.

Thus, devotees may choose their day of observance based on tradition, ensuring the celebrations remain filled with devotion, fasting, and prayers seeking Lord Krishna’s blessings.
