Khaira’s Remark on ₹1,000 Aid to Women Triggers Row; Punjab Women Commission Issues Notice

Gurpreet Singh :- In a fresh political controversy has erupted in Punjab after Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira made a remark regarding the ₹1,000 financial assistance meant for women, drawing sharp reactions from several quarters. The statement sparked outrage in political circles, prompting the Punjab State Women Commission to take suo motu cognisance of the matter and initiate action.

Taking the issue seriously, the commission issued notices to Khaira and also summoned Punjab Congress president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring. According to officials, the notices were sent through the Senior Superintendent of Police in Kapurthala, directing both leaders to appear in person before the commission on March 12.

The commission stated that the comment made by Khaira about the ₹1,000 allowance for women was considered derogatory and disrespectful towards women. The chairperson of the commission asserted that the use of inappropriate language against women for political gain cannot be tolerated, adding that such remarks undermine the dignity and respect of women in society.

The controversy also echoed inside the Punjab Legislative Assembly during the ongoing budget session, where the issue led to heated exchanges among legislators. Several leaders criticised the remark and demanded accountability, turning the matter into a significant political flashpoint in the state.
