Khaira Barred from Remarks as CM’s Aide Files Defamation Suit Amid Political Row

Chandigarh, July 31, 2025 — Punjab Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira finds himself in legal crosshairs after Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s Officer on Special Duty (OSD), Rajbir Singh, filed a defamation case against him for allegedly making false and damaging statements.

The local court has not only accepted the complaint but also issued a restraining order against Khaira, barring him from making any public remarks concerning the case. Khaira has been formally served and directed to appear before the court on August 11.

The defamation suit stems from a series of allegations Khaira reportedly made against Singh, which the latter claims were “baseless and defamatory,” intended to tarnish his public image. This legal action comes days after Rajbir Singh issued a 72-hour ultimatum demanding a written apology. Singh had warned that legal steps would follow if Khaira failed to comply.

Khaira, however, denied having received any notice initially and maintained that he would issue a “strong rebuttal” once he formally accesses the document.

The case adds fuel to the already simmering political tensions in Punjab, where Khaira has been a vocal critic of the Aam Aadmi Party government. With the court now involved, the matter has moved beyond verbal exchanges, and the legal outcome could have broader implications for political discourse in the state.
